Turism&Travel : Baldwin's 30 Rock may not fly American Airlines any more

Tuesday 13 December 2011

It seems that some the airline industry did not find Alec Baldwin's faux-apology on Saturday Night Live so funny after all.

After the actor got kicked off a plane for refusing to turn off his phone while playing the game Words With Friends, he angered American Airlines flight attendants and they are not letting go.

The American Airlines Flight Attendants Union are trying to stop the actor from flying their friendly skies in any form, and now hope to ban his hit TV show 30 Rock from their in-flight entertainment offerings.

E! Online reports that the Union have inquired into who makes the decisions at the company regarding the entertainment line-up.

Unfortunately for the disgruntled flight attendants, the issue may be out of their hands.

Apparently NBC decides which of their shows are offered on which AA flights, so there is little that the attendants can do except make their displeasure known. And that, they have done.

Even though Baldwin got on another American Airlines flight after he was kicked of his first one last Wednesday, the feud continued as he turned to Twitter and television to make his point heard.

The move may well anger other passengers and not simply Baldwin, who has won two Emmy Awards for his role as the network executive Jack Donaghy on the series. The show has aired five seasons (with the sixth due to start in the new year) and won three Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series.

The controversial funny man appeared on Saturday Night Live this weekend to ridicule the episode, dressed up as a Southern, moustachioed airline pilot called Captain Steve Rogers and issued an apology to himself for the incident, saying: 'Mr Baldwin is an American treasure!'

He also took a dig at cabin staff that day, saying 'Mr Baldwin' was playing a game 'for smart people'.

SNL star Seth Meyers repeatedly questioned the thinly veiled performance, asking Baldwin, 'Are you sure this is the right way to handle this?'

He also asked: 'It was also reported that Alec Baldwin slammed the bathroom door so loudly it could be heard in the cockpit?'

'Now Seth, Words with Friends can be frustrating,' Baldwin replied. 'But when you think you're about to play 'jailers' off of somebody's 'quiche' and you realize you don't have the ‘i' - let me tell you - that would make you slam the door too!'

'Don't phones interfere with the plane's communication system?” Myers asked.

'Oh, you don't believe that, do you, Seth? Would you really get on an airplane that flies 30,000 feet in the air if you thought a Kindle switch would bring it down? Come on it's just a cruel joke perpetrated by the airline industry.'

Baldwin has been accused of being 'extremely rude to the crew' and calling them 'inappropriate names' on a flight out of Los Angeles yesterday - and it led to him being kicked off the plane.

The 53-year-old refused to to turn off his phone at the appropriate time, then stood up, took his phone into the toilet and slammed the door, according to the airline.

He was pictured at LAX looking agitated after being removed from the plane.

An American Airlines statement read: 'He slammed the lavatory door so hard, the cockpit crew heard it and became alarmed, even with the cockpit door closed and locked.

'They immediately contacted the cabin crew to check on the situation.

'The passenger was extremely rude to the crew, calling them inappropriate names and using offensive language. Given the facts above, the passenger was removed from the flight and denied boarding.'

American Airlines said phones must be turned off for taxiing and takeoff.

The 30 Rock star's Twitter account has been deactivated today, but in earlier tweets he criticised the airline and vowed never to fly with them again.

'Flight attendant of American reamed me out 4 playing WORDS W FRIENDS while we sat at the gate, not moving,' he wrote along with the hashtag, '#nowonderamericaairisbankrupt'

Baldwin then updated his flight status, writing: 'Now on the 3 o'clock American flight. The flight attendants already look.....smarter.'

He later tweeted that he was finally on his way, with a dash of satirical humour.

'#theresalwaysunited Last flight w American. Where retired Catholic school gym teachers from the 1950's find jobs as flight attendants,' he wrote.

The actor was finally arrived at JFK in the evening, after what had this time appeared to be a drama-free trip home.

Baldwin has allowed his temper get the better of him in the past.

In 2007, he horrendously left a voice mail for his young daughter calling her a 'rude, thoughtless little pig.'

He later apologised and wrote a book inspired by the incident.
